Lifestyle Medicine

Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when used intensively, often reverse adverse health conditions.

There are six pillars or areas of focus that are addressed simultaneously as part of the treatment plan:

a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections. 

The role of the patient is also shifted in Lifestyle medicine.

In conventional medicine, the physician acts more as the expert consultant and the patient has the more passive role of receiving and complying with prescriptive treatments.

In Lifestyle medicine, the physician acts as both a consultant and a coach. The client has an active role and responsibility in planning, staging and executing treatment goals.

Behavioral interventions with consistent engagement build the capacity of the client to hard wire a new lifestyle which produces a new health outcome.
